Women's Health Week at Right at Home
Women’s Health Week is back in 2024! This year’s theme is ‘Your voice. Your choice.’
Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week is Australia’s largest event dedicated to the health and wellbeing of all women, girls, and gender-diverse people.
Today, 79% of employees in the health care and social assistance industry and 64% of employees in the education and training industry are women. Further statistics show that on average, Australia’s health workforce is predominantly female (74% in 2022), although health professions with higher income levels tend to have a higher representation of males. For example, in 2022, 88% of Nurses and Midwives were female compared with 45% Medical Practitioners. Other roles with underrepresentation of females include, general practitioners (48% female), periodontists (37% female) and specialists (36% female).
Couple these statistics with the fact that life expectancy data in Australia consistently shows that women live longer than men, older Australians are more likely to be women, cared for by women.
Whether you are giving or receiving care, it is important to remain on top of your physical and mental health.
Here are some great tips for improving your next health care visit:
- Be open about your body.
- Write down what ails you.
- Know and communicate your family medical history.
- Be honest.
- Leverage support from family and friends.
- Get that second opinion.
